THE TRADITION

|
Our grandfathers tell us that there was a time when people and animals were the same. We could go back and forth between these two identities. The day came when some of us took off our animal clothes forever, but the animals still recognize us as their relatives. Dependent on nature and living close to it, Native peoples have a great respect and feel a strong kinship with the natural world. Their food, clothing, tools and homes were all derived from the animals found in their world. Traditional Native games also come directly from this relationship to nature. Games were developed to imitate the behavior of animals and to learn and perfect the skills needed to hunt them in a respectful and honorable way. |
